The Basic Chemistry
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and Delta-9 THC are closely related molecules. THCA is the acidic precursor to Delta-9 THC. It exists naturally in raw, fresh cannabis plants. Delta-9 THC is what THCA becomes after decarboxylation — the process of applying heat.
Think of THCA as the raw ingredient and Delta-9 THC as the finished product. One simple chemical reaction (losing a carboxyl group through heat) separates the two.
Do They Feel Different?
In raw form, THCA is non-intoxicating. If you ate raw THCA flower without heating it, you would not get high. However, once you apply heat — by smoking, vaping, or cooking — THCA rapidly converts to Delta-9 THC, producing the familiar effects most cannabis users are looking for.
So when you smoke THCA flower from Pin High Supply, the experience is essentially the same as smoking high-potency cannabis.
The Legal Difference
This is where things get interesting. The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as cannabis containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Importantly, the law measures Delta-9 THC specifically — not THCA.
This means that hemp flower can legally contain high concentrations of THCA as long as its Delta-9 THC remains under 0.3%. THCA flower sold by Pin High Supply is tested to meet this federal standard, making it legal to purchase and ship across most of the United States.
Delta-9 THC cannabis, by contrast, remains a Schedule I controlled substance federally and is only legal in states that have passed their own cannabis laws.
